Sooners Fall Short of Four-Game Sweep
NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma baseball team was run-ruled by visiting Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 14-4, in eight innings at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped as four-game win streak for the Sooners, who dropped to 10-7.
Corpus Christi (11-5) got to OU junior right-hander Kyle Tyler (Oklahoma City) for two runs in the top of the first inning. Oklahoma answered and tied the game in the bottom half. Junior left fielder Cade Harris (Leona, Texas) drew a leadoff-walk and scored on a triple to right-center by redshirt-sophomore center fielder Kyler Murray (Allen, Texas), who would score the tying run on a wild pitch.
The Islanders regained the lead with three runs in the fifth. They added two in the sixth and broke the game open with a five-run seventh, including a two-run home run by first baseman Harrison Dinicola, who went 2-for-4. Left fielder Thomas Jeffries led the Corpus Christi lineup with a 4-for-5 day as the Islanders totaled 17 hits to the Sooners’ three.
Tyler lasted three innings in a no-decision with two runs against him on four hits to go with three strikeouts. Sophomore RHP Nathan Wiles (Overland Park, Kan.) was the first OU reliever out of the bullpen. Wiles (1-1) went 1.2 innings with three runs score on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the losing effort.
Right-hander Jackson Owens (2-0) pitched 6.1 innings in the win. He allowed four runs on two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
The Sooners return to action for a pair of games in the midweek beginning Tuesday, March 13 against Texas Southern.
