NORMAN – After winning his second straight American Cup last weekend, Oklahoma men’s gymnastics junior Yul Moldauer earned another weekly accolade on Tuesday and was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week for the third time this season.
The Sooners have won MPSF gymnast-of-the-week honors for the fifth time this season.
Moldauer became the first gymnast to win back-to-back American Cup titles since former Sooner Jonathan Horton won in 2006 and 2007.
The American Cup is part of the International Gymnastics Federation World Cup series and is the most prestigious event on American soil this year. The competition was the first of many international events leading up to the World Championships and eventually the 2020 Olympic Games.
After posting scores above 14.000 on five of six events, the Arvada, Colo., native finished with an 85.964 all-around total.
Moldauer did not trail after the second rotation, placing in the top-three in all six events. He finished first on still rings (14.333), second on floor (14.666), pommel horse (14.066), parallel bars (14.500) and high bar (13.666), and third on vault (14.733).
Even without competing in a NCAA competition this weekend, Moldauer retained his national top average on parallel bars (15.117) and ranks second on still rings (14.750) and fourth on floor (14.533).
The Sooners return to NCAA action for “Senior Night” on March 10 at 7 p.m. against California at McCasland Field House. The Sooners will honor seniors Hunter Justus and Reese Rickett in the final home meet of their storied careers.
