NORMAN – For the fourth time in the last six tournaments, Oklahoma women's golf is in first place after the opening round of play. The Sooners lead the 13-team field at the Hurricane Invitational after recording a 285 (-3) in Monday's round at the par-72, 6,150-yard Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Fla.
The only team to shoot below par, Oklahoma leads second-place Miami (288, even) by three strokes with 36 holes remaining in the event.
“We had a solid start today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “There were some tricky hole locations on the course today, but our game plan took that into consideration as we took advantage of some of the holes.”
The Sooners finished the day with three golfers in the top eight of the individual standings.
Senior Rylee Pedigo, tied for third, led the group by carding a season-best 69 (-3). Pedigo opened her round with four birdies on the first six holes and closed the day with back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18. The senior is one stroke out of first, trailing only Tilda Larsson of Barry and Renate Grimstad of Miami (68, -4).
Junior Julienne Soo is one stroke behind Pedigo and tied for fifth after shooting a 70 (-2) in the first round of her spring season.
After three early bogeys, freshman Kaitlin Milligan bounced back on the back nine to finish her day at even par (72) and sit in eighth place.
Senior Hannah Wood is tied for 20th at 74 (+2) and fellow senior Ana Ruiz is in 37th with a 76 (+4).
Senior Valerie Tanguay, competing in the tournament as an individual, shot a 73 (+1) and is tied for 13th.
The second of three rounds tees off Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. CT. The Sooners will tee off of the first hole and be grouped with golfers from Miami and Coastal Carolina.
