Sooners Send Five to USA Volleyball Tryout
NORMAN – USA Volleyball announced five University of Oklahoma student-athletes as participants for the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts, which will take place March 2-4. Seniors Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) and Alyssa Enneking (League City, Texas) are two of the Sooners that will head to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. For a tryout consisting of 234 players from 89 colleges.
OU first-year head coach Lindsey Gray-Walton will also send sophomores Sarah Maras (Tulsa, Okla.), Kylee McLaughlin (Carrollton, Texas) and Sarah Sanders (Plano, Texas). Players will be trying out for spots on the U.S. Women’s National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team, which consists of three teams. Athletes selected for the CNT are eligible for three competition options, including international contests in Asia (May 20-31) and Europe (July 4-15) plus domestically in Detroit (June 22-July 1). This marks the first time since 2014 that Oklahoma has been represented at the open tryout. Former Sooners Julia Doyle and Kierra Holst attended in 2014 and each competed for the Junior National Team in 2014 and 2013, respectively.
Alford, a 5-foot-9 setter, has been a starter throughout most of her career at OU. As a junior, she averaged 9.38 assists and 2.01 digs per set. Enneking earned All-Big 12 First Team and AVCA All-America Honorable Mention this past year. The 5-foot-11 outside hitter posted a team-high 4.20 kills per set to go with 2.94 digs.
Outside hitters Maras and Sanders saw spot duty off the bench as freshman. Maras, standing at 6-foot-1, appeared in 64 sets; totaling 63 kills and 46 blocks. The 6-foot-4 Sanders knocked down 25 kills and collected 14 blocks in 25 sets. McLaughlin transferred in to Oklahoma at the semester break from Oregon State. A 5-foot-10 setter, she was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year last fall. McLaughlin averaged 10.69 assists, 2.58 digs and 0.47 assists per set as a rookie.
