NORMAN – A pair of Oklahoma gymnasts received Big 12 Weekly accolades, the conference announced Monday. Sophomore Maggie Nichols was named the Gymnast of the Week and freshman Anastasia Webb earned Newcomer of the Week accolades.
This is the fourth time this season Nichols has been honored as the Gymnast of the Week, and seventh of her career. Nichols was also named the Newcomer of the Week seven times in 2017, giving her 14 career accolades. Webb was honored as the Newcomer of the Week for the sixth time this season. She is just the sixth gymnast in Big 12 history to earn the honor more than five times in one season, joining teammates Nichols (7), Brenna Dowell (6) and Nicole Lehrmann (5) and former Sooner Chayse Capps (6), along with Missouri’s Rachel Updike (9).
Nichols took home the all-around title with a 39.825, the second highest total in the nation this season. The sophomore posted four marks of 9.95 or higher for the second time this season and tied her season high on bars with a 9.950. Nichols took home a share of every event title at Friday’s meet and has posted the top two all-around scores in the nation this season. Her RQS of 39.700 is better than the season high of all but four gymnasts this season. She ranks No.1 nationally in the all-around, bars and beam.
Webb was honored for the sixth time this season as she put together a strong all-around performance against West Virginia. Webb put up at least two scores of 9.9 or higher for the fourth time this season. She took home a share of the vault title with a 9.950, setting a career and season high. Webb finished second in the all-around with a 39.575 and came in second at the meet on both beam (9.950) and floor (9.875). She now has a career high of 9.95 or higher on all four events.
