OU Defeats USF, Pushes Win Streak to Four
NORMAN – The Oklahoma women’s tennis team notched its fourth straight win Friday with a 4-3 victory over USF at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The Sooners dropped the doubles point, but came out firing in singles to capture the match. With the win, OU improves to 5-4 on the season, while USF dropped to 2-6 overall.
“I think the key is that every single court that we played today had an opportunity to win and you’re not going to win on every court, but your job as a team player is to fight and compete as hard as you can on every court and scrap out those four wins so that we can win the match together," said head coach Audra Cohen.
"For the seniors – Lily (Miyazaki), Malene (Stripp) and Christie (Brigante) – to do that, and a newcomer in Jasmine (Asghar) to come out here is just a true testament to how deep this team is. It’s never the same one or two people. It’s a complete team effort and every court, and you feel the energy that they’re fighting and giving themselves an opportunity to win at their point."
Jasmine Asghar and Christie Brigante made quick work of Juliana Cardoso and Jessica Chaves, winning 6-2, in the top spot. With the win, the duo moves remains undefeated at 4-0 on the season.
Camila Romero and Simran Sethi suffered their first loss as a pair when they were defeated by Evelyne Tirone and Ana Roman on court three, 6-3.
That left court two to decide the doubles point. Skyler Miller and Malene Stripp battled Nicole Dzenga and Vanja Klaric to a tiebreaker, but fell, 7-6 (3).
Friday’s contest marked the first time this season that the Sooners lost the doubles point but won the match.
In singles action, Stripp put the Sooners on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Dzenga, from the No. 6 line. In the first set, Stripp took a 3-0 lead before Dzenga fought back to tie the frame at 4, but the Sooner prevailed and gave up just one game in set two to close out the match. With the win, Stripp extended her winning streak to four matches.
No. 26 Miyazaki also picked up her fourth consecutive singles win with a 6-2, 6-4, win over Ana Roman on court one.
Brigante took down Chaves on court three, winning, 6-4, 6-3, good for her fourth victory in a row.
Asghar defeated Evelyne Tiron in a three-setter, winning 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. The sophomore fell in the first frame, but turned the tables on Tiron to give up just one game in the second set and force a third, which she claimed for the win.
On court five, Romero suffered a heartbreaking loss to Klaric, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. The freshman gave up the first set, 6-2, before surging back in the second frame to win, 6-3, and send court five to a third set. Romero led the deciding frame, 5-2, before Klaric won the next five games to take the match.
At No. 4, Sethi was defeated by Cardoso, 6-3, 6-4.
The Sooners are back in action Saturday, March 3, when they travel to Tulsa to face the Golden Hurricane at noon.
