Oklahoma Walked Off Twice in Extras
CONWAY, S.C. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team suffered a pair of walk-off losses in extra innings at Springs Brooks Stadium on Saturday. The Sooners fell to No. 17 South Alabama, 6-5, in 12 innings before a 4-3 loss in 10 to Coastal Carolina.
A dropped fly ball in the bottom of the 12th led to the Jaguars game-winning run. Third baseman Paul Russo delivered the game-winning knock for USA on a single through the left side with two down. The Chanticleers got the game-winning run in the 10th on a single up the middle by second baseman Cory Wood.
In game one, the Sooners outhit the Jaguars, 8-6. Junior right fielder Cade Harris (Leona, Texas) was 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run double on his second double of the game. Harris was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the tying run in the top of the eighth.
South Alabama got its first four runs of the day all on the long ball. Shortstop Brendan Donovan hit a solo home run in the second and Wells Davis later tied the game, 4-4, in the fourth with a solo blast down the right field line. Right-hander Tyler Carr went six innings in the start for the Jaguars. He gave up four runs, two earned, on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
Jared Proctor (1-0) got the win in 1.2 innings of relief with one strikeout. Sophomore right-hander Nathan Wiles (Overland, Kan.) lasted 4.1 innings in the start and struck out five, while giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits and two walks. Freshman lefty Levi Prater (Ada, Okla.) took the loss despite not allowing a hit in 4.1 innings of work. He struck out seven and walked three as OU pitchers combined for 17 punchouts in 12 innings.
In the nightcap, Oklahoma rallied from a 3-0 deficit with three unearned runs in the top of the eighth. Junior third baseman Brylie Ware (Sedgwick, Kan.) put a sharp grounder in play to short that was botched as a run scored with two outs. Sophomore designated hitter Brady Lindsly (Keller, Texas) then delivered a two-run single to tie the game.
For Coastal, right-hander Zack McCambley (1-0) got the win in two-shutout innings with four strikeouts. Right-hander Zack Hopeck was brilliants in a 6.1-inning start. He struck out seven and gave up just two this and two walks without yielding a run.
Senior right-hander Devon Perez (Ashburn, Va.) pitched four innings in the start for OU. He allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits and a career-high four walks with two strikeouts. Junior righty Connor Berry (Sugar Land, Texas) took the loss with one unearned run scoring after getting one out and giving up one hit.
The Sooners close out the weekend Sunday against Virginia Tech in Myrtle Beach. Junior RHP Kyle Tyler (Oklahoma City) gets the start on the hill.
