NORMAN – The Oklahoma wrestling team dropped a Big 12 contest with No. 12 South Dakota State, 22-13, on Sunday afternoon inside McCasland Field House.

The Sooners claimed four bout victories in the dual, including winning both matches that featured two ranked wrestlers (125 and 174 pounds).

No. 17 Christian Moody put OU on the board first with a 5-3 decision over No. 19 Connor Brown at 125 pounds. Moody used takedowns in the first and third periods and an escape in the second to secure his 20th win of the season.

Davion Jeffries earned his third major decision of the season on Sunday, defeating Colten Carlson, 9-1, at 149 pounds. After earning a takedown in the first period, Jeffries added an escape, a takedown and a penalty point to lead 6-0 after the second. He added another takedown and the riding-time point for the bonus-point victory.

At 165 pounds, Dawaylon Barnes claimed a 9-2 decision over Logan Peterson. He recorded takedowns in each period and added an escape, a penalty point and the riding-time point for his 15th win of the season.

Ranked No. 11, senior Yoanse Mejias took down No. 9 David Kocer at 174 pounds by 7-5 decision. Mejias jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first period with a takedown and a four-point nearfall. He added an escape in the third period to edge his ranked foe.

In the 133-pound bout, Jake Rubio was pinned by No. 1 Seth Gross in 1:47. Mike Longo dropped a 7-0 decision to Henry Pohlmeyer at 141 pounds. Justin Thomas narrowly dropped a 5-4 overtime decision after battling with No. 12 Luke Zilverberg in the 157-pound bout that ended in the first set of tiebreakers.

At 184 pounds, Matthew Waddell was defeated by Martin Mueller in a 13-1 major decision. Andrew Dixon was edged 3-1 at 197 pounds by No. 9 Nate Rotert. In the heavyweight match, Connor Webb was downed by Alex Macki, 5-3.

“I thought that some of our guys wrestled pretty well,” OU head coach Lou Rosselli said. “It was 6-4 and they stole a few of matches from us. At 141, he went in on a shot and went from feet to back in really a one-move match. At 157, I think they are ranked twelfth, and I think we had a little better guy, but it just didn't happen… I think that those two things really were the (difference makers in the) match, and obviously, 133 giving them the fall never helps either, but that is a really good kid. It was a pretty competitive (dual), but we lost some close ones."

Up next, the Sooners hit the road for two more conference matches, facing Utah Valley on Feb. 2 and Wyoming on Feb. 4.
