NORMAN – After a big home win over Big 12 foe Iowa State and Texas Woman’s, a pair of OU gymnasts were honored by the Big 12, the conference announced Monday.
Sophomore Maggie Nichols was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week for the first time this season and freshman Anastasia Webb earned her second Freshman of the Week nod.
The pair were instrumental in leading the Sooners to another victory and a No. 1 overall ranking. The duo’s scores also helped OU secure a No. 1 ranking on vault, bars and beam after three weeks of competition.
Nichols was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week for the fourth time in her career. It’s her 11th overall nod as she was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week seven times in 2017. Nichols secured the all-around title in the tri-meet with a 39.625, the third-highest score in the nation thus far. She won two event titles with a 9.950 on bars and a 9.925 on beam. Nichols ranks in the top three nationally in the all-around, bars and beam.
Webb continued to make her presence known, matching her season-opening all-around score with a 39.400. She set two career highs with a 9.875 on both vault and floor. On vault, she was one of five 10.0 start values and her 9.875 helped the Sooners to a nation-leading 49.450 on vault. She tallied at least a 9.825 on all four events and came in second in the all-around.
The Sooners will be back on the road Friday, Jan. 26, to take on the No. 5 Florida Gators. The meet is slated for a 5:45 p.m. CT start at the Stephen O’Connell Center and will air on the SECNetwork+.
