NORMAN – Oklahoma forward Mandy Simpson was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

The Boise, Idaho, native, helped the Sooners to a 96-73 win in their season opener last Friday inside Lloyd Noble Center. In 28 minutes of action, Simpson recorded 12 points, five rebounds and three assists in her collegiate debut.

The freshman also finished 4-of-6 from the field and 4-of-6 at the free throw line as OU won its 19th season opener in the last 20 years.

Simpson became the 10th true freshman to start a season opener for the Sooners during the Sherri Coale era, and the first OU forward since Leah Rush in 2003-04. She is the first true freshman to start the season opener for OU since Gabbi Ortiz started at guard to open the 2014-15 season.

No. 21/21 Oklahoma faces DePaul on Monday night in Chicago, Ill., with tip-off set for 7 p.m. CT. The game will air live on the Sooner Radio Network and on the TuneIn app.
