NORMAN — Oklahoma women's golf holds a five-stroke lead after two rounds at the Battle at the Beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The Sooners are facing a 14-team field, including five top-25 opponents, at the par-71, 6,209-yard Club Campestre San Jose.
OU fired a 281 (-3) for the second consecutive round on Saturday to bring the team's 36-hole score to 562 (-6). The Sooners are five strokes in front of No. 1 UCLA and No. 11 Texas, who are tied for second.
"I'm really proud of our team for another solid round," OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said. "We are doing what we need to do off the tees and placing ourselves in good spots. We need to continue focusing on our own game and play with confidence in tomorrow's final round."
Three Sooners sit in the top 10 individually, led by senior Hannah Wood, who holds fifth place. Wood recorded a 69 (-2) in the second round to finish the day at 139 (-3) overall
Freshman Kaitlin Milligan put together OU's best round of the day, pocketing seven birdies en route to a 68 (-3). Senior Julienne Soo tallied a 71 (E) on Saturday to sit in a tie for sixth with Milligan at 140 (-2) through 36 holes.
Senior Ana Ruiz posted a 73 (+2) in the second round to bring her two-round total to 143 (+1) and take a share of 11th place.
Senior Rylee Pedigo rounds out the OU lineup, sitting in a tie for 53rd at 151 (+9) through two rounds. Classmate Valerie Tanguay, competing as an individual, is tied for 63rd at 154 (+12) overall.
The final round of the Battle at the Beach is set to begin Sunday at 8:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start. OU will begin on holes Nos. 1-5 and will be paired with Texas, UCLA and Baylor. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com.
