NORMAN – Oklahoma women’s golf leads a 14-team field at the Battle at the Beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, after firing a 281 (-3) in Friday’s opening round. The Sooners lead five top-25 opponents, including No. 1 UCLA, at the par-71, 6,209-yard Club Campestre San Jose.

The Sooners lead the Bruins by one stroke and are two strokes ahead of third-place Houston.

“I’m really proud of the way we played today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “We were able to play steady throughout the round and need to continue to do so moving forward. We will focus on continuing to put ourselves in great spots off the tees and playing our game.”

Three Sooners shot under par in the opening round, led by junior Julienne Soo with a 2-under 69. Soo is tied for fifth place and is two strokes behind first-place Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest and Leonie Harm of Houston.

Seniors Hannah Wood and Ana Ruiz are one stroke behind Soo in a tie for eighth place. The duo combined for seven birdies as they each shot a 70 (-1).

Freshman Kaitlin Milligan sunk five birdies to score a 72 (+1) and end her opening round tied for 20th while senior Rylee Pedigo is tied for 42nd after shooting a 75 (+4).

Senior Valerie Tanguay, competing in the tournament as an individual, also produced a 4-over 75.

The Sooners tee off in Saturday’s second round with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. CT. Oklahoma’s golfers are grouped with UCLA, Houston and Texas.
