NORMAN — Fourteen players from the Oklahoma soccer team have received Academic All-Big 12 recognition, including 12 first-team selections, the conference announced on Tuesday.

Seniors Tori Bowman (management information systems), Madeline Brem (finance), Lizzie Luallin (health and exercise science) and Kaitlyn Keith (multidisciplinary studies), juniors Bethany Block (health & exercise science), Jordan Hobart (health and exercise science), Marissa McMahand (health and exercise science) and Paige Welch (biomedical engineering), redshirt sophomores Kaylee Dao (arts & sciences) and Kyle Escobedo (history of science, technology and medicine), and sophomores Ivanna Rivas (sociology) and Madison Verge (biochemistry) were all named to the first team, while senior Rasha Roberts (human relations) and sophomore Kristina O’Donnell (undecided) secured second-team honors.

Dao, Hobart, Luallin and McMahand were recognized with 4.0 GPAs over the last two semesters. The academic honor is the third for Bowman, Brem and Luallin, while Welch has earned academic recognition from the Big 12 twice. This marks the 14th season that at least five Sooners have been included on the first team.

The first team consists of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The Sooners will open postseason play on Wednesday in Kansas City, Mo., when they face No. 1 seed Oklahoma State at 11:30 a.m. CT in the Big 12 Championship. This will be the third Bedlam match-up of the year, with the Cowgirls taking the first two meetings by scores of 2-1 and 4-1. The match will be broadcast live on the Big 12 Digital Network, with the winner advancing to semifinal play on Friday.
