ATLANTA – The No. 12 Oklahoma men’s golf team carded 295 (+7) in the stroke play round of the third annual East Lake Cup to earn the No. 2 seed heading to match play.
“Stroke play is so much different from match play, so we’ve got to go back and re-work our thoughts a little bit on what is going to be happening tomorrow,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “Today, we got off to a really good start. The type of start that we needed to go and win today. We did not play No. 14 and 18 very good today. Two par 5s that are not very hard. Overall, we were consistent when it comes to scoring, but just not quite good enough today.”
Senior Grant Hirschman led the Sooners during Monday’s round, finishing in a tie for second place at 73 (+1). Hirschman picked up three birdies in his round and finished one shot back of individual champion Will Gordon of Vanderbilt.
Junior Brad Dalke, junior Blaine Hale and sophomore Garett Reband shared sixth place at 74 (+2). Dalke started the opening round with three birdies through the first six holes, while Hale posted three birdies and eagled hole No. 6 to give the Sooners a fast start. Reband had a two-birdie effort during his round.
Rounding out OU’s lineup, sophomore Riley Casey tied for 12th place at 75 (+3).
Vanderbilt earned the top seed besting the Sooners by three shots as the Commodores recorded a 292 (+4) to lead the field. Illinois’ 301 (+13) was good enough for third place, while Oregon finished fourth in the stroke play round at 313 (+25).
Tuesday’s semifinal between OU and Illinois will be a rematch of the 2017 NCAA Championship semifinal, which the Sooners won, 3-1-1.
