NORMAN – Oklahoma men’s tennis junior Ferran Calvo has been selected for the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, the organization announced Friday.
“We are excited for Ferran and what he has accomplished so far this fall,” said head coach Nick Crowell. “His 21-2 start to the season ins one of the most impressive runs I’ve seen in a long time to start a career. We are very excited to see him go head-to-head with the nation’s elite and compete for a national title.”
The tournament is the only intercollegiate event in which athletes across all five divisions compete for a national title. The 64-player draw brings together the nation’s elite tennis players, and has replaced the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships as the concluding event to the fall portion of the college tennis schedule.
Calvo was an at-large selection to the elite tournament after compiling an impressive 21-2 record this fall, beginning with a 17-match winning streak. He was crowned champion at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational and the Alabama Four-in-the-Fall before his remarkable run at the ITA All-American, where he went 8-1 to advance through the prequalifying and qualifying draws and earn a spot in the main bracket. Calvo advanced to the round of 16 before suffering his first loss of the season at the hands of eventual champion William Blumberg of North Carolina.
Calvo, who transferred to OU from Tyler Junior College, is no stranger to national championships: the Valencia, Spain, native was a back-to-back NJCAA singles champion and added an NJCAA doubles championship to his trophy case last spring at Tyler.
Oracle ITA National Fall Championship action kicks off Wednesday. Draws will be announced Tuesday.
