NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma baseball team’s Red & White World Series began Monday at L. Dale Mitchell Park with the Red Team winning, 7-1. Freshman first baseman Cade Cavalli (Bixby, Okla.) powered the way for Red’s victory with a 3-for-4, three-run home run effort.
Junior right-handed pitcher Jake Irvin (Bloomington, Minn.) picked up the win in a three-inning start. He tossed three-scoreless innings and allowed two hits and two walks, while striking out four. Senior right-hander Devon Perez (Ashburn, Va.) took the loss for the White Team. In three innings, he surrendered four runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
Cavalli scored the first run of the day in the top of the second inning on a double by sophomore shortstop Brandon Zaragoza (Moore, Okla.). Cavalli singled sharply to third to lead off the inning and with two outs was running on a 1-2 pitch to Zaragoza that was ripped past the third base bag.
An inning later, a one-out error and a walk would open the door for Cavalli’s three-run blast out to left. Red would load the bases after that before Perez registered his third strikeout to strand all three.
Sophomore catcher Brady Lindsly (Keller, Texas) got the White Team on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run over the right field wall.
The Red Team outhit the White Team, 12-5, for the game. Cavalli, Zaragoza and junior third baseman Brylie Ware (Sedgwick, Kan.) all recorded three-hit days.
