TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma men’s tennis team concluded the ITA All-American’s pre-qualifying round with junior Ferran Calvo advancing to the singles qualifying draw.

Calvo took down Monmouth’s Nicola Pippoli 6-3, 6-4, Sunday to secure a place in the 128-man qualifying draw. The junior received a first-round bye before cruising to a 6-2, 6-1, win over Colin Markes of Texas on Saturday, whom he defeated to win the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Sept. 17. He then took down Iowa’s Will Davies, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the final round.

Calvo, who transferred to OU prior to the season, is one of 16 athletes to advance to the qualifying draw from the pre-qualifier’s field of 256 and remains undefeated as a Sooner at 13-0 in singles.

Freshman James Davis made a run to the third round, where he was defeated by Indiana’s Keivon Tabrizi, 6-3, 6-3. Davis defeated Temple’s Juan Araoz, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round and earned a 6-1, 6-3, victory over Igor Kolaric from Illinois State on Saturday.

Jochen Bertsch received a first round bye, but fell to Baylor’s Constantin Frantzen, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, in the following match. Bertsch moved to the consolation bracket, where he was defeated by Jan Palleres of Memphis, 6-2, 6-2

Stefano Tsorotiotis also opened the tournament with a bye and was defeated by New Mexico’s Tim Buttner in a tight match in the second round. Tsorotiotis came out on top of a first set tiebreaker before falling in the next two frames, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, the freshman downed Akos Kotorman of Baylor, 7-6, 6-4.

Senior Mason Bridegan suffered a three-set loss to Lamar’s Sebastian Santibanez, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 in the first round.

Qualifying play begins Monday, with Calvo representing the Sooners along with Jake van Emburgh and Alex Bakshi. No. 16 Spencer Papa will play in the main draw, which kicks off Thursday. Papa was an at-large selection for the tournament.
