MALIBU, Calif. – Oklahoma women's tennis senior Lily Miyazaki’s run at the Oracle ITA Masters came to an end Saturday when she was defeated by UCLA’s No. 1 Ena Shibahara in an extended semifinal match, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (7), 6-2.

“We're very proud of Lily's effort today. When two of the best players in college tennis square off, it comes down to a couple of points here or there,” said OU head coach Audra Cohen.

“While it's heartbreaking, the positive here is that she has proven she has the consistent level of a top-10 player. She continues to improve with each match and I'm excited to watch her continued growth this year.”

In the first set, 19th-ranked Miyazaki and Shibarahara traded games until Miyazaki forced a tiebreaker. The senior battled back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the seven-point tiebreaker at 5-all. Shibahara pulled ahead to close out the frame, 7-6 (6).

Miyazaki took an early lead in the second set, going up 4-2 before Shibahara closed the gap to force a second tiebreaker. Miyazaki held on the win the set, 7-6 (7).

Miyazaki and the Sooners return to action next weekend at the Rivera ITA All-American in Pacific Palisades, Calif., which begins Sept. 30. Miyazaki will begin competition on Oct. 5 in the main draw of the Rivera ITA All-American.
