Sooners Fall on Road, 2-0, to No. 17 Cal
NORMAN – The Oklahoma women’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 16/17 California Friday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif.
In the 11th minute, Madeline Brem was issued a red card, forcing OU to play down a man for the remaining 79 minutes of the game.
"It's hard to consider this a loss against a top program when playing 80 minutes a player down," head coach Matt Potter said. "The discipline and intent to carry on, carve out opportunities in open play and set pieces leaves us knowing in those moments we have to execute both individually and collectively."
The Golden Bears got on the board in the 39th minute. Miranda Nild received an assist from Caroline Clark, turning and firing the ball into the left side of the net from eight yards out.
In the 90th minute, Emma Westin used a heel kick to slot the ball underneath the diving McKinley Crone and give Cal a 2-0 lead with just 28 seconds left on the clock.
"The second goal not coming until the 90th minute shows how well both the game plan and the players work ethic came together. We'll move forward with that mindset to produce a strong performance on Sunday."
The Sooners struggled to get anything going offensively, recording just one shot in the first half to Cal’s 11. For the game, OU managed just four shots while the Bears tallied 21.
The Sooners will wrap up their weekend with a Sunday afternoon match at the University of San Francisco. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CT.
