NORMAN – University of Oklahoma men’s tennis coach Nick Crowell and Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione announced the Sooners’ 2017 fall schedule on Wednesday.
The Sooners open play this weekend at both the Napa Valley Tennis Classic in Napa Valley, Calif., and the Midlands Invitational in Midland, Texas.
“We are looking forward to competing this weekend and the rest of the fall,” OU head coach Nick Crowell said. “Our schedule provides athletes with one of the most challenging schedules combining elite collegiate and professional events around the country.”
OU will be represented in three different tournaments Sept. 22-26, participating in the Alabama Four-in the Fall (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), Fountain View Pro Futures Qualifier (Orlando, Fla.) and the Tiburon Challenger (Tiburon, Calif.).
The Sooners will compete in the Oracle ITA All-American event in Tulsa, Okla., starting Sept. 29. Spencer Papa and Jake van Emburgh will represent OU in the doubles draw. Papa also will compete in the main singles draw at the event with van Emburgh earning a spot in the qualifying singles draw. The rest of OU’s roster will compete in the singles pre-qualifying competition.
OU’s squad will travel to Minneapolis for the ITA Central Regional Championships hosted by the University of Minnesota starting Oct. 18. The Sooners will wrap up their fall slate at the Birmingham Futures (Birmingham, Ala.) on Oct. 26 and the Charlottesville Challenger (Charlottesville, Va.) on Oct. 27.
The fall slate concludes at the ITA Fall Championships at Indian Wells, beginning Nov. 2 in Indian Wells, Calif.
The ITA also released their preseason rankings on Tuesday with Papa entering the year at No. 16 in the singles rankings. Papa and van Emburgh begin the fall at No. 20 in the nation in doubles.
