THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The 20th-ranked Oklahoma women’s golf team opened its 2017-18 season with two record-breaking rounds at the Jim West Challenge in The Woodlands, Texas, on Monday. OU shot a combined 556 (-12) to sit in second place with one round remaining at the par-71, 6,010-yard Fazio Course at The Club at Carlton Woods.
The Sooners began the day by firing a first-round score of 279 (-5) – the lowest season-opening round in program history. Oklahoma followed up the morning performance by shooting 277 (-7) in the afternoon, one stroke shy of the program record for lowest overall round. OU’s combined two-round score of 556 is the best score through 36 holes in OU history, shattering the previous record of 563 (set at the 2012 Alamo Invitational).
“We played solid today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “I’m really proud of our team for fighting throughout the day. Whenever we play 36 holes, you have to be in survival mode and really stay focused. We look forward to finishing strong in tomorrow’s round.”
No. 5 Duke leads the 13-team field with a two-round score of 542 (-26). The Sooners hold a three-stroke lead over third-place Texas Tech (-9) and are 12 strokes ahead of fourth-place Kent State (even).
Four Sooners sit in the top 16 of the individual standings, led by junior Julienne Soo, who shot back-to-back rounds of 68 (-3). The junior is tied for fourth place with a six-under 136, trailing first-place Leona Maguire of Duke by six strokes. Soo carded just two bogeys on the day, putting together 34 holes of par or better.
Making her return to the Oklahoma lineup after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury early last year, redshirt freshman Sydney Youngblood scored a 139 (-3) and sits tied for 11th place.
Senior Ana Ruiz shot two rounds of one-under 70 and is tied for 13th at 140 (-2). Fellow senior Valerie Tanguay is one stroke behind Ruiz with a two-round total of 141 (-1), good for 16th place.
After shooting a 75 (+4) in her opening round, senior Rylee Pedigo saw the Sooners' largest bump in the second round, producing a one-under 70 in the afternoon. Pedigo is tied for 27th with a score of 145 (+3).
Freshman Kaitlin Milligan, competing as an individual, is tied for 32nd after scoring a 146 (+4) in her collegiate debut.
