BOISE, Idaho – Down a player for the final 55 minutes of play, the Oklahoma soccer team dropped its Sunday afternoon match, 1-0, to Boise State at the Boas Soccer Complex
The Sooners played the final 55 minutes down with just ten athletes on the field as Paige Welch was issued a red card in the 35th minute and disqualified for the remainder of the game.
"To play a player down for any amount of time challenges a team and to respond in the manner we did for 50+ minutes speaks to the group and its character," head coach Matt Potter said. We felt we could still win the game and regrouping at halftime allowed us to set ourselves up to do exactly that."
Oklahoma outshot Boise State 9-6 and held the advantage in corners with seven to the Bronco’s two. Kristina O’Donnell led the Sooners with three shots. Kaylee Dao and Tori Bowman each notched a pair, while Luallin and Yost each had one.
Raime Sherle gave the Broncos the 1-0 lead in the 61st minute. Sherle went one-on-one with OU keeper McKinley Crone and chipped the ball in just under the crossbar.
"The statistics show we took the game to them and we created some good looks that we need to finish," Potter said. "The goal didn't break our will but we have to learn that we can't continue the trend of climbing out of a hole. We look forward to being home next week and the opportunity to play again."
In the 83rd minute, Lizzie Lualllin found the back of the net on a beautiful cross from Erika Yost. However, a foul was called on the Sooners negating the goal and keeping Boise ahead.
Crone recorded three saves in the contest, while Boise State goalkeeper Janelle Flores added a pair in the shutout.
The Sooners are back home at John Crain Field Sunday, Sept. 10, to take on Illinois at noon CT.
