NORMAN – The Oklahoma soccer team dropped its season-opening match, 2-0, to Arizona on Friday at the OU Soccer Complex.
Both teams nearly played a scoreless first half, but a 44th-minute goal from Arizona’s Jill Aguilera split OU’s (0-1) back line to score the match’s opening goal. The Wildcats extended their advantage in the second half as Hailey Mazzola converted from inside the 18-yard box in the 66th minute.
“It’s the first game of the year so we clearly saw tonight we weren’t the product we wanted to be so we’ll take a look at the video and we’ll go from there,” head coach Matt Potter said. “I thought they were very aggressive from the get-go.
“From the first minute they imprinted themselves on us and we had a hard time adjusting to that through the 90 minutes so they were able to get forward early and get forward constantly and that was one of the lessons for today and we kind of panicked today, but, hey, one game into the season.”
Throughout the match, the Sooners had moments of offensive threats. OU’s best chance came in the second half as freshman Erika Yost’s angled shot was saved by Arizona keeper Lainey Burdett.
Kaylee Dao, Kyle Escobedo, Kristina O’Donnell and Rasha Roberts each tallied one shot apiece, respectively.
In her first collegiate start in goal, McKinley Crone recorded seven saves, including five in the second half. Arizona outshot the Sooners, 16-9, and finished with a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal.
The loss marked OU’s first in a home opener since 2008.
The Sooners hit the road Sunday to take on SMU at 7 p.m. CT. The match can be seen on PonyUp TV online. Live stats will be available here. OU is back home next Friday as it hosts in-state rival Oklahoma State for the first Bedlam match of the season.
