NORMAN – Hoping to secure spots in the P&G Championships in August, Oklahoma sophomore men’s gymnast Matt Wenske and former Sooners Alex Powarzynski and Michael Reid are set for the 2017 National Qualifier this weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Competition at the U.S. Olympic Training Center gets underway Saturday at 7 p.m. CT with the trio taking center stage in the Senior Division session to cap the evening.
Wenske and 2017 grad Powarzynski are set to participate in the all-around competition, while Reid, who finished at OU in 2015 when he won the NCAA title on pommel horse, is slated to compete on the parallel bars and pommel horse.
OU junior Yul Moldauer, winner of the 2017 American and Winter Cups, and freshman Alexei Vernyi have already secured a spot for next month’s championships, while former Sooners Allan Bower (2014-17), Chris Brooks (2006-09), Jake Dalton (2010-12), Alex Naddour (2010-11), Kanji Oyama (2013-15) and Colin Van Wicklen (2014-17) have also qualified.
The P&G Championships will take place Aug. 17-20 in Anaheim, Calif., at the Honda Center.
