Three Sooners advance to P&G Championships

NORMAN — Oklahoma’s men’s gymnastics program will be well represented at the P&G Championships, as three Sooners qualified for next month’s event with strong performances at the National Qualifier Saturday night in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Sophomore Matt Wenske and alumni Alex Powarzynski and Michael Reid each secured qualification for the national competition and will join nine fellow Sooners who pre-qualified for the Championships. 

“I’m very happy with the results from the qualifier,” OU head coach Mark Williams said. “Every Sooner competing advanced to the P&G Championships. I’m also especially proud of Alex for hitting 6-for-6 and competing in the all-around for the first time in four years.”

Powarzynski, a senior this past season, posted a mark of 80.600 in the all-around to finish in fourth place. The Menifee, Calif., native’s best event was the vault, on which he took fifth with a score of 14.450. Powarzynski also claimed top-10 finishes on the parallel bars (13.900, 6th) and rings (13.800, 8th).

 Wenske claimed fifth in the all-around with a score of 80.100 behind a first-place finish on the vault (15.050). The Houston, Texas, product also posted a sixth-place finish on the floor with a score of 14.100 and finished eighth on the parallel bars with a 13.800. 

Reid, who finished at OU in 2015, competed in competed on the pommel horse and parallel bars and posted top-10 showings on both. His 14.550 mark on the pommel horse was good for second, and he finished seventh on bars with a 13.850.

OU junior Yul Moldauer and freshman Alexei Vernyi pre-qualified for the P&G Championships, along with former Sooners Allan Bower (2014-17), Chris Brooks (2006-09), Jake Dalton (2010-12), Alex Naddour (2010-11), Kanji Oyama (2013-15) and Colin Van Wicklen (2014-17). Sooner senior Hunter Justus also pre-qualified for the Championships, but will not compete due to injury. 

The P&G Championships, USA Gymnastics’ national championship event, will take place Aug. 17-20 in Anaheim, Calif., at the Honda Center. The first day of the event will be broadcast on the Olympic Channel, while the final two days of the meet will air on NBCSN and NBC.
