NORMAN – University of Oklahoma volleyball coach Santiago Restrepo announced the Sooners' 2017 schedule, which begins Friday, Aug. 25 with the NIKE Invitational at McCasland Field House. Oklahoma plays 11 matches at home, including opening night against Seton Hall.
The Sooners also welcome Northwestern State and former Big 12 rival Colorado to Norman for its home tournament. OU takes on NSU in the first of two on Saturday, Aug. 26 before finishing the weekend that night against the Buffaloes.
Oklahoma's schedule features 29 matches, including 15 against nine teams that competed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The Sooners face their first 2016 NCAA Tournament team in week two against High Point on Friday, Sept. 1 in Athens, Ohio. The Panthers won the Big South in 2016 and finished with an overall record of 23-10. Oklahoma faces Ohio at its home Bobcat Invitational later that night and finishes the weekend against Georgia on Saturday, Sept. 2.
In week three, the Sooners head to New Orleans for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic hosted by Tulane. OU plays Nicholls State (Sept. 8) in the opener before playing Southern Miss and the host Greene Wave (Sept. 9).
The final tournament in early season action sends Oklahoma to College Park, Md. The Sooners play host Maryland out of the Big Ten and Pac-12 opponents USC and Washington on Wednesday Sept. 14 and Thursday, Sept. 15. The order of the matches will be determined at a later date. The Huskies reached the Elite Eight last season with three sweeps before a 3-0 setback to Nebraska to finish the year at 29-5 and six in the RPI. USC went 18-4 and was eliminated in the first round of the tournament to land at 44 in the final RPI.
The Sooners open Big 12 play at home on Wednesday, Sept. 20 against Kansas State, which finished 21-10 and 19 in the RPI after a second round appearance in the postseason. Oklahoma is then on the road for three matches in a row at Iowa State (Sept. 23), in non-conference action at North Texas (Sept. 27) and at Baylor (Sept. 30). The Cyclones and Bears are both coming off postseason berths in 2016.
In October, the Sooners are home for Big 12 play against Texas Tech (Oct. 4), Kansas (Oct. 7), Texas (Oct. 21) and Baylor (Oct. 28). Oklahoma then welcomes West Virginia (Nov. 4), Iowa State (Nov. 15) and TCU (Nov. 25) to wrap up the regular season. The Jayhawks won the Big 12 last year and finished 27-3 overall and 10th in the RPI, while Texas reached the national title match and finished 27-5 overall and second in the RPI. The Horned Frogs sneaked into the tournament last season and finished with an overall record of 15-13 and ranked 21st in the RPI.
On the road, the Sooners head to West Virginia (Oct. 13), TCU (Oct. 18) and Kansas (Oct. 25) in October. Finishing the road slate are matches at Texas Tech (Nov.), Kansas State (Nov. 18) and Texas (Nov. 22).
