NORMAN – Three current and former members of the University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team will represent the United States at this weekend's Guimaraes International Tournament in Guimaraes, Portugal.
Sophomore and three-time NCAA national champion Yul Moldauer, along with former Sooners Allan Bower and Kanji Oyama, all members of the U.S. Senior National Team, will be the three athletes for the U.S. in the weekend's competition. Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams is with the team serving as coach.
"We're excited to have an all OU team representing the United States in Portugal," Williams said. "Really looking forward to the team final Saturday and the event finals on Sunday."
Moldauer won two national titles at the latest NCAA Championships, adding to his all-around title as a freshman in 2016. One of the top gymnasts at the collegiate level, Moldauer has already had success at the international competition level. In March the Arvada, Colo., native became the ninth Sooner champion in American Cup history by winning the all-around title over 2016 Olympic silver medalist Oleg Vernlaiev of Ukraine.
Bower is fresh off an historic senior season in 2017. He helped lead the Sooners to a third straight unbeaten national title and at the 2017 NCAA Championships he earned All-America honors on six of the seven events. In his career he earned a total of 11 All-America honors. Oyama completed his eligibility in 2016 and was a integral part of the Sooners' 2015 and 2016 titles. A seven-time All-American, Oyama has competed for the U.S. on the Senior National Team for the last two years.
Competition begins Saturday to determine the team champions, as well as the individual apparatus qualifiers. The team format is three up, two count. The apparatus finals are scheduled for Sunday with the top six, limit two per country, advancing from Saturday.
