NORMAN – PK80, an early-season men's basketball tournament created to honor Nike co-founder Phil Knight, released its two eight-team brackets on Wednesday. Oklahoma will compete in the "Victory" bracket and open tournament play against Arkansas on Thursday, Nov. 23 (Thanksgiving Day) at Moda Center in Portland, Ore.
The event celebrates the 80th birthday of Knight and his contributions to college basketball. The "Victory" and "Motion" brackets will run simultaneously in Moda Center and Veterans Memorial Coliseum, with the crowning of two champions. Games will be played Thursday, Nov. 23, Friday, Nov. 24 and Sunday, Nov. 26. Game times and TV information will be released on a later date (all games will be televised on ESPN networks).
Oklahoma will face either defending NCAA champion North Carolina or Portland in the second round, and Connecticut, Georgetown, Oregon or Michigan State in the final game. The "Motion" bracket is comprised of Butler, Duke, Florida, Gonzaga, Ohio State, Portland State, Stanford and Texas. The PK80 field boasts 24 national titles, including 10 of the past 14 winners.
“We're very excited to be included in this prestigious field of teams,” said Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger. “In celebration of Phil Knight's 80th birthday, PK80 promises to be an excellent week of competition against some of the best programs in the history of college basketball. It will be a tough test for us early in the season and a great opportunity for our team to compete in an environment similar to the NCAA Tournament."
Oklahoma's opening-round contest against Arkansas will be the first meeting between the two programs since 2012. The Sooners are 12-15 all-time against the Razorbacks but have won seven of the last 10 meetings (all since 2000). OU has won six of its last eight games against SEC teams.
