NORMAN – The Oklahoma wrestling team celebrated the 2016-17 season on Saturday evening with its annual spring banquet, held at the East Side Stadium Club inside Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
The Sooners were joined by friends, family and supporters of the program to highlight the past season’s achievements with dinner and awards. Awards were presented by head coach Lou Rosselli and assistant coach Michael Lightner, and trainer Chris Watson emceed the event.
Redshirt senior Clark Glass was presented the program’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award following a 22-8 season and his third straight appearance at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis.
Classmate Brad Johnson, who made his first trip to the national tournament, was awarded the Jimmy White Award, given to a wrestler on the basis of athletic ability, team contribution, individual achievement and team spirit.
The Most Outstanding Freshman award was presented to Christian Moody, who posted a 17-13 record in his rookie season, and junior Mike Longo (20-10) was named Most Improved in the program.
Junior Dawaylon Barnes was honored with the Warrior Award for his efforts on the mat and stepping up to the occasion. Barnes, who began the season at 157 pounds, also wrestled at 165, 174 and 184 pounds for the Sooners throughout the season due to injuries in the lineup.
Oklahoma’s four seniors, Glass, Ross Larson, Johnson and Matt Reed, were celebrated for their contributions and commitment to the program throughout their careers.
The Sooners recorded an 11-6 record in the 2016-17 season, including second-place finishes at both the Virginia Duals and the Big 12 Championship. Eight OU wrestlers capped off the season with a trip to the NCAA Championships in St. Louis.
