NORMAN – Six Oklahoma women’s golfers earned a spot on the 34-member Academic All-Big 12 First Team, the conference announced Tuesday. The Sooners’ six spots tied for the most selections in the conference with TCU.
The honor marked the second first-team selection of her career for Valerie Tanguay, a junior management major. Classmate Hannah Wood, a human relations major who was named to the second team a season ago, earned first-time accolades this year.
Seniors Haley Hill (Health & Exercise Science) and Maggie Neece (Communication), junior Rylee Pedigo (Communication) and sophomore Julienne Soo (Business) all earned first-team honors for the first time this season.
"I'm very proud of the hard work our student-athletes are putting into their work in the classroom," OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said. "As a coach, I always put an emphasis on academics. These girls came to school to get an education, and they are true examples of being students first and athletes second."
To qualify for the Academic All-Big 12 Team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, either cumulatively or over the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. First-team members have maintained a 3.20 GPA or higher, while second-team members have earned a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
The Sooners return to the course this Friday-Sunday (April 21-23) in San Antonio, Texas, when they will compete in the 2017 Big 12 Championship at the Dominion Country Club.
