NORMAN – The Oklahoma women’s tennis team returns to Norman for its final regular season home slate this weekend.
The No. 41 Sooners (10-6, 0-4 Big 12) look to snap a four-match losing streak as they face No. 23 Kansas on Friday at 5 p.m. CT and Kansas State on Sunday at noon at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
In its last matches, OU fell to then-No. 33 TCU, 4-1, and then-No. 6 Texas Tech, 4-2, on the road.
The Sooners gave Texas Tech all it could handle. Despite dropping the doubles point, OU surged back in singles play. With Texas Tech leading 3-1, junior Malene Stripp captured a three-set victory on court four to keep the Sooners alive. OU needed two more wins to clinch the match, but fell just short at No. 5 and No. 6.
OU's freshman duo of Ann Selim and Julie Byrne became the first Sooners to reach the 10-win mark in singles play this season at TCU and Texas Tech. Selim is now 10-3 overall in singles after reaching the milestone at TCU, while Byrne notched her tenth singles victory of the spring at Texas Tech to move to 10-2 on the year.
The No. 23 Jayhawks (11-4, 3-1 Big 12) come into Friday’s matchup on a four-match winning streak after routing Iowa State, 4-0, on March 26 in Lawrence.
Kansas has defeated Big 12 opponents Iowa State, West Virginia and TCU, all at home. The meeting with the Sooners will be Kansas’ first Big 12 match on the road of the spring.
In singles play, Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum leads Kansas with a 10-2 record on courts two and three, with seven consecutive wins in the No. 2 slot. Nina Khmelnitckaia is 9-1 on court two, with her one loss coming against a ranked opponent. No. 81 Anastasia Rychagova is 7-2 at No. 1 singles for the Jayhawks.
In doubles, No. 35 Bernard-Feigenbaum and Khmelnitckaia have compiled an 12-4 overall record on court one.
The last time both teams met, Kansas defeated the Sooners, 4-1, in Lawrence on April 22, 2016. Kansas leads the all-time series, 9-8.
Scouting Kansas State
Kansas State (11-9, 2-2 Big 12) comes into the match following a 4-1 loss to Wichita State on March 31 at home. The Wildcats will face Oklahoma State in Stillwater Friday before traveling south to Norman. The weekend’s matches will be K-State’s first conference contests on the road.
Carolina Costamagna leads the Wildcats in singles play with an 11-9 overall record in the top flight. Millie Stretton is 10-8 at No. 3, with a three-match winning streak coming into the weekend. At No. 1 doubles, Costamagna and Ines Mesquita have won three straight matches for the Wildcats and have complied a 7-5 record this spring.
In the last meeting between the teams, the Sooners bested the Wildcats, 4-2, in Manhattan on April 24, 2016. Oklahoma leads the all-time series, 12-7.
Seniors Mimi Fotopoulos and Ann Pepper will be honored 20 minutes prior to the start of the Kansas State match on Sunday.
