NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team opens its spring season at McCasland Field House on Saturday, April 1. The Sooners welcome North Texas and Central Oklahoma to Norman for three matches beginning at 11 a.m.
UNT and UCO take the court for the first match followed by OU vs. UCO at noon and OU vs. UNT at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
The Sooners completed the 2016 season under 13th-year head coach Santiago Restrepo with a 14-15 overall record. Restrepo owns a 235-167 record during his time in Norman and has guided Oklahoma to eight NCAA Tournament appearances; most recently in 2014.
The core of Oklahoma’s returning team is in its rising junior class. Setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) took over the reins of the offense full time in 2016 and averaged 11.29 assists per set. Outside hitter Madison Drescher (Southlake, Texas), who earned some spot starts in the middle, averaged 1.79 kills and 0.53 blocks per set. Outside hitter Alyssa Enneking (League City, Texas) totaled 321 kills, averaging 2.89 per set along with 2.42 digs per set.
Defensively, libero Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) returns to lead the back line after averaging 3.27 digs per set. Defensive specialist Emma Kelly (Houston, Texas) adds depth on the back row after appearing in 69 matches over the last three seasons and averaging 1.14 digs per set in her career.
