Sooners Meet Texas in Red River Matchup

NORMAN After a two-match road swing, the No. 39 Oklahoma women’s tennis team returns to Norman Sunday to take on No. 30 Texas at Headington Family Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon CT. 


The Sooners (10-3, 0-1 Big 12) return to Norman following a two-match road swing in Virginia, where they defeated Old Dominion, 4-0, and No. 50 VCU, 4-1. The matches marked Oklahoma’s first time on the road since their second contest of the season at Arkansas..

At Old Dominion, freshman Ann Selim recorded a shut out of Natalya Malenko on court six for her eighth win overall. Selim is the only Sooner to play a perfect match this season.

At VCU, Julie Byrne picked up her fifth consecutive win and ninth overall. Byrne has just one loss during the spring season.

Sunday’s matchup will be OU’s third clash with a ranked opponent in its last four matches. The Sooners have previously met No. 10 Baylor and No. 50 VCU.

Junior Lily Miyazaki remains at No. 21 in the ITA singles rankings. 

Scouting the Longhorns

Texas is 7-5, 1-1 on the season. The Longhorns into the match following a 4-0 loss to Oklahoma State in Stillwater.

Texas has three players in the ITA singles rankings: No. 26 Bianca Turati; No. 62 Petra Granic; and No. 87 Neda Koprcina. Freshman Turati owns a 6-2 record in the top flight, while fellow newcomer Granic is 7-1 overall. Koprcina is 4-4 in the two slot.

In doubles play, Granic and Dani Wagland are ranked No. 52 in the latest ITA release.

The teams last met on April 3, 2016 in Austin, when the Longhorns defeated Oklahoma, 4-1.

Texas leads the all-time series 17-1. The Sooners’ lone win came on March 22, 2003, when they defeated the Longhorns, 4-3, in Austin.

Weather permitting, the match will be played outdoors. Admission to the Headington Family Tennis Center is free.
