Second Leg of Spring Break Trip Starts Thursday

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Winners of 12 of its last 13, No. 9/10 Oklahoma (21-5) wraps up a six-day, seven-game trip to California during Spring Break Thursday at the LMU Tournament in Los Angeles. The Sooners began the week in Long Beach by splitting a pair of games with No. 5/4 Arizona and Long Beach State.

Thursday, the Sooners face UC Santa Barbara (12-12) at 12 p.m. CT and Loyola Marymount (9-13) at 4 p.m. CT before playing Cal Poly (17-7) on Friday at 10 a.m. CT and Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. The Sooners also play DePaul (11-8) on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.

OU has eight native Californians on its roster: Fale Aviu (Oceanside), Shay Knighten (Buena Park), Mariah Lopez (Saugus), Kylie Lundberg (Lakewood), Melanie Olmos (Riverside), Sydney Romero (San Diego), Vanessa Taukeiaho (Rancho Cucamonga) and Lea Wodach (Coto de Caza).

Facing UC Santa Barbara

Oklahoma is 3-0 all-time against UC Santa Barbara, with all three meetings coming at neutral sites. OU has outscored the Gauchos, 23-5, in those matchups. The teams last met in 2013 in Palm Springs as Oklahoma posted a 5-2 win.

OU and UCSB have three common opponents this year in Wichita State, Omaha and Washington. The Gauchos went 2-3 against those teams with losses to WSU and UW. OU was 3-1 vs. those teams with its loss coming to Washington.

Oklahoma freshman Vanessa Taukeiaho and UCSB freshman Felisha Noriega both attended Etiwanda HS in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

Facing Loyola Marymount

OOklahoma is 4-0 all-time against Loyola Marymount, with all four previous meetings taking place at neutral sites. In those four games, OU posted a pair of run-rule wins and outscored the Lions 37-3 overall.

The teams last met at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in 2015 with OU posting a 9-0, five-inning win. Paige Parker was 2-2 with two runs scored and three RBI, and got the win with one hit allowed and two strikeouts in 3.0 innings.

OU and LMU have one common opponent in Ole Miss. The Sooners beat the Rebels, while the Lions lost to them twice.

Facing Cal Poly

Oklahoma is 5-0 all-time against Cal Poly, with all five games coming at neutral sites. OU has won three of the games by one run and all its victories have been by three runs or fewer. The teams have not met since OU’s 4-2 win in 2011.

The Sooners and Mustangs have one common opponent this year in UCLA. The Sooners run-ruled the Bruins, while Cal Poly lost to them.

Facing DePaul

Oklahoma is 10-6 all-time against DePaul with a 10-4 record at neutral sites. OU has won six straight in the series. This is the third straight season the teams have met.

Last season, Sydney Romero had three of Oklahoma’s 15 hits in a 6-1 win in Fullerton, Calif.

Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso and DePaul’s Eugene Lenti are both among the winningest coaches in NCAA history. Lenti is fourth among active coaches and sixth all-time in wins (1,274), while Gasso is ninth and 14th, respectively, with 1,105.

Dating back to April 8 of last season, the Sooners have won 14 straight road games. That’s tied for the third longest road winning streak in program history and two wins off the school record.
