IRVING, Texas – University of Oklahoma baseball sophomore Brylie Ware (Sedgwick, Kan.) has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. The award marks the first of Ware’s career and the second of the season for a Sooner.
Ware hit a team-high .562 (9-for-16) in a 4-1 week for Oklahoma with three multi-hit games. He totaled seven runs scored, seven driven in, two doubled and two walks with a .632 on-base and .688 slugging percentage. Ware went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI in OU’s series-opening game against Buffalo on Thursday. He finished the nightcap of Friday’s doubleheader with a 3-for-3, three-run, three-RBI performance and wrapped the weekend by going 2-for-3 with three runs and a RBI on Saturday.
For the season, Ware is hitting a team-leading .462 with 15 RBI and 13 runs.
Ware is the Sooners’ first weekly award winner since sophomore right-hander Jake Irvin (Bloomington, Minn.) claimed Pitcher of the Week after opening day. The last player from Oklahoma to earn Newcomer of the Week was Sheldon Neuse on April 7, 2014.
The Sooners are in action Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT against Georgia Tech to begin a five-game swing through Georgia this week.
