NORMAN — Two members of the No. 1 Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team received recognition in the final set of 2017 Big 12 Conference weekly awards, the conference announced Monday. Junior AJ Jackson was named the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week, while freshman Maggie Nichols is the league’s Newcomer of the Week.
Both Jackson and Nichols helped the Sooners to a 197.800-196.775 victory at No. 17 California on Sunday, capping an undefeated regular season for OU. This is the fifth undefeated regular season under 11th-year head coach K.J. Kindler (2008, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2017).
On floor, Jackson tallied a huge 9.95 to claim the event title, the highest score of the meet for any competitor on any event. She also contributed a 9.9 on vault to finish third on the apparatus. Jackson has now scored at least a 9.9 on vault eight times this season and at least a 9.95 on floor in six straight meets. The specialist honor is the fifth of the season for Jackson.
Nichols contributed a pair of 9.9s on both bars and beam against the Bears to claim a share of the individual titles on both events. In her freshman campaign, Nichols has not scored below a 9.9 on either of those events this season. The Little Canada, Minn., native earned seven newcomer of the week accolades from the conference this season and 10 overall awards.
The Sooners finished with 24 total awards from the Big 12 in 2017, receiving at least two accolades from the conference each week.
This weekend, postseason competition begins for Oklahoma as it heads to the Big 12 Championship, scheduled for 4 p.m. CT on Saturday inside Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas.
The Sooners will be in pursuit of their sixth straight conference championship and ninth under Kindler. The meet, which will pit OU against No. 7 Denver, No. 22 West Virginia and Iowa State, will air through FloGymnastics (subscription required).
