NORMAN — The No. 11 OU men's golf team holds ninth place after the second round of the competitive Southern Highlands Collegiate. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is taking place at the par-72, 7,374-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas.
The Sooners posted a 297 (+9) on Tuesday, bringing their team total to 589 (+13). The squad is facing one of college golf’s best fields, which features six teams in the top 10 of Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and 10 in the top 25.
“Our guys hung in all day, but we had a couple disasters coming down the stretch,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “We need a great day tomorrow.”
No. 7 USC sits on top of the leaderboard with a 569 (-7). No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 10 Stanford are tied for second at 575 (-1). Pepperdine holds fourth with a 579 (+3), and No. 9 Texas Tech and No. 17 UNLV share fifth at 580 (+4).
Junior Grant Hirschman leads the Sooners for the second consecutive round, holding a share of eighth place out of 80 individual competitors. Competing in his 100th career round, the Collierville, Tenn., native recorded a 72 (E) with five birdies to make his 36-hole total 142 (-2).
Two strokes back from Hirschman is senior Max McGreevy, who is tied for 16th. McGreevy also tallied a 73 (+1) on Tuesday, opening his day by shooting par on each of the front nine holes.
Rylee Reinertson sits in a tie for 42nd place with an overall 150 (+6). The junior was putting together a solid round but struggled on the 17th hole to finish with a 75 (+3) for the second day in a row.
Redshirt freshman Quade Cummins shot a 78 (+6) on the day and shares 63rd place at 154 (+10) overall. True freshman Riley Casey is two strokes behind Cummins and sits in a tie for 67th after carding a 77 (+5) in the second round.
The final round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate will take place on Wednesday, and the Sooners are scheduled to begin tee times at 11 a.m. CT from hole No. 1. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com.
