FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Oklahoma women’s tennis team dropped its first road match of the season to Arkansas, 6-1, on Sunday.
The Razorbacks (4-2) clinched the doubles point and won three singles matches that were pushed to a third set to hand the Sooners (1-1) their first loss of the season.
"Today was a tough match," said head coach Audra Cohen. "We started flat in doubles and that really hurt our momentum overall. Then in singles we had multiple opportunities and we weren't able to execute when we needed to."
At No. 1 doubles, Arkansas’ Leolia Jeanjean and Shannon Hudson defeated OU's 49th-ranked pair of Lily Miyazaki and Julie Byrne 6-3. At No. 2, Mia Jurasic and Ana Operanovic beat the Sooners’ tandem of Simran Sethi and Malene Stripp 6-3. OU's Serena Nash and Ann Selim were locked in a tight battle, trailing 4-3, on court three when play was halted.
Freshman Julie Byrne came away with the Sooners’ lone singles victory of the afternoon, defeating Arkansas’ Sasha Shkorupeieva at the No. 6 line, 6-3, 6-0. Byrne had momentum early in the first set, leading 4-0 at one point, but Shkorupeieva closed the gap and came within two games before Byrne claimed the opening frame.
The freshman rolled through the second set to pick up her second singles win of the spring season. Her victory tied the match at 1-1 for the Sooners.
"Moving forward we have to make more decisive and well-reasoned decisions from start to finish in each match."
- Head Coach Audra Cohen
At the No. 5 line, Simran Sethi fell to Natsuho Arakawa in a two-set nail-biter, 6-3, 7-5. Arakawa took the first set, but Sethi battled back in the second frame to tie the set at 5-5 before Arakawa converted a break chance to clinch the win for the Razorbacks.
Freshman Serena Nash was defeated by Arkansas’ Mia Jurasic, 6-3, 6-3, on court three. Junior Malene Stripp won her the first set in her match, but ultimately, fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, to Arkansas' Leolia Jeanjean at the No. 4 line to clinch the match for the Razorbacks.
Mimi Fotopoulos rallied to win the first set on court two, but was defeated by Arkansas' Ana Oparenovic, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. In the final match left on court, No. 10 Lily Miyazaki dropped a marathon contest to the Razorbacks' Shannon Hudson, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.
The Sooners return to Norman for a nine-match home stand beginning with North Texas on Friday at 2 p.m CT. They’ll also face Wisconsin the following Sunday at 10 a.m CT.
