Sooners Move to Gold Bracket at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. – The No. 15 Oklahoma wrestling team picked up two dual wins on Friday, downing Old Dominion, 29-6, and Chattanooga, 34-6. The duals are part of the pool play session of the Virginia Duals, held inside Hampton Coliseum.

The Sooners (4-3) picked up 16 bout wins on the day, eight in each dual, including seven bonus-point victories. Oklahoma’s performance on Friday sets them up for the tournament’s Gold Bracket, which also consists of No. 5 Virginia Tech, No. 19 Arizona State and North Dakota State. The Sooners will take on Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. CT Saturday in the bracket’s first round.

Oklahoma 29, Old Dominion 6

Christian Moody started off the dual for the Sooners at 125 pounds, recording a 13-5 major decision over Steven Simpson. Moody struck first in the opening frame and led 3-2 at the end of the period. The redshirt freshman tallied a two-point nearfall and three takedowns over the final two periods, including one at the buzzer to secure the bonus-point win.

At 133 pounds, Jacob Rubio got the second major decision of the dual for the Sooners with a 9-1 win over Emilio Saavedra. Rubio led 2-1 after the opening two frames and tacked on a takedown, a 4-point nearfall and the riding-time point to give the Sooners an 8-0 advantage in the team score.

In the 141-pound bout, junior Mike Longo and ODU’s Kevin Budock were knotted at 0-0 at the end of the second frame. Longo escaped to start the third period, but Budock connected for a takedown to make the score 2-1. Longo responded with a reversal and tallied the riding-time point for a 4-2 decision.

Redshirt senior Clark Glass made his 157-pound debut against ODU’s Austin Eads with a 10-5 decision. Eads struck first with an early takedown and 2-point nearfall, but Glass countered with a takedown and 4-point nearfall to lead 7-4 at the end of the opening frame. Glass escaped to start the third and tacked on another takedown and the riding-time point to secure the win.

At 165 pounds, junior Yoanse Mejias recorded his first win over a ranked opponent, downing No. 16 Seldon Wright by 5-3 decision. Mejias earned a takedown in the first and second periods and escaped to start the third for the victory.

Redshirt senior Matt Reed registered a 6-1 decision over Antonio Agee in the 174-pound matchup. Reed got out to a quick start, connecting on a takedown and adding a 2-point nearfall in the first period. He added a second-period escape and the riding-time point in the win.

In the 197-pound bout, Brad Johnson upset No. 9 Kevin Beazley, 4-3. Beazley led 3-1 through two periods, but Johnson escaped and recorded a late takedown in the final frame to give the Sooners a 23-6 advantage with one bout to go.

Redshirt senior Ross Larson capped the dual off with a win by fall in 5:15 over ODU’s Will Hilliard at 285 pounds. Larson had an active opening frame, recording two takedowns, a 4-point nearfall and an escape to lead 9-3 at the time of the fall.

Sophomore Davion Jeffries dropped a 5-4 decision to Michael Hayes at 149 pounds, and junior Andrew Dixon lost to No. 9 Jack Dechow, 2-1, at 184 pounds.

Oklahoma 34, Chattanooga 6

Christian Moody used a late takedown to secure a 4-3 decision over Alonzo Allen in the 125-pound matchup. The two were locked at 2-2 entering the final frame, but Allen escaped to hold a 3-2 advantage. Moody’s late takedown gave him the win and the Sooners a 3-0 lead to start the dual.

In the 133-pound bout, redshirt sophomore Jacob Rubio, registered a 7-5 decision over Chris Debien. Debien led 5-4 at the end of two periods, but Rubio escaped and tallied a takedown with three seconds remaining for the win.

Mike Longo dominated the 141-pound bout with a 9-1 major decision over Chase Zemenak. Longo connected for three takedowns in the matchup and the riding time-point to extend the OU advantage to 10-0 after three bouts.

Sophomore Davion Jeffries registered a 10-0 major decision over UTC’s Dylanger Potter at 149 pounds. Jeffries led 4-0 entering the final period and recorded a reversal and earned three stall points for the bonus-point win.

In the 157-pound bout, Clark Glass made quick work of Dalton Clark with a 19-0 technical fall in 2:33. Glass secured an early takedown and never looked back, turning Clark for four consecutive 4-point nearfalls. The win gave Oklahoma a 19-0 advantage half way through the dual. 

Yoanse Mejias got his second win of the day at 165 pounds with a 5-3 decision over Justin Lampe. Mejias held a 4-3 advantage at the end of two periods and escaped to make the final score 5-3.

At 174 pounds, redshirt senior Matt Reed went to work early, recording a takedown and continuing with a win by fall in 1:25 over Chad Solomon to give Oklahoma a dominate 28-0 lead.

Redshirt senior Brad Johnson got his second big win of the day, this time coming by fall in 5:32 over UTC’s Clay Dent. Johnson controlled the entire match, leading 13-0 at the time of the pin.

Andrew Dixon dropped a 3-1 decision to Bryce Carr, and No. 11 Jared Johnson downed No. 19 Ross Larson by 4-1 decision in the heavyweight matchup.
