NORMAN — The Oklahoma football team parlayed its nation-long 10-game winning streak into top-five final rankings in the AP and Amway Coaches Polls that were released Tuesday.

The Sooners, who went 11-2 this season, won all nine of their Big 12 games and beat Auburn 33-19 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, finished No. 3 in the 2016 Amway Coaches Poll and No. 5 in the AP Top 25 Poll.

OU's No. 3 finish in the Coaches poll is its highest since 2004 when it also finished third. This marks the second straight year the Sooners finished No. 5 in the AP poll, and nation-leading 30th time in school history (next highest total is 25 by Ohio State).

In Bob Stoops' 18 seasons as OU head coach, the Sooners have finished in the top 5 of the AP poll seven times. He has directed OU to four additional top-10 AP finishes, three of those as the nation's No. 6 team. His squads have finished in the AP's top six in three of the last four years.

The Sooners' Big 12 title this year was its second straight and 10th under Stoops. The 10 league championships are one more than the number of home games OU has lost during his tenure. The next highest number of Big 12 titles since Stoops was hired in 1999 is two.

OU's 2016 offensive attack was perhaps the nation's best. The Sooners ranked No. 2 nationally in total offense (554.8 yards per game) and No. 3 in scoring offense (43.9 points per game; first among Power 5 teams). OU also set an FBS record for passing efficiency rating (193.8) and led the country in completion percentage (school-record .706).

The Sooners' defense, which faced seven teams that finished in the top 31 nationally in total offense (five of the top 17), improved considerably as the season wore on. OU led the league in Big 12 play by allowing opponents to complete just 53.4 percent of their pass attempts. The Sooners held each of their last four foes to completion percentages below 50 percent.
