NORMAN – Oklahoma freshman Alissa Dalton is one of 24 athletes invited to training camp for the 2017 USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team, USA Softball announced Tuesday.

Dalton and the other invitees were chosen by the Women’s National Team Selection Committee after a two-day selection process. They will take part in a training camp and exhibition games in Oklahoma City this June and July. The 24-player roster will then be trimmed to 17 and that squad will compete in the World Baseball Softball Confederation Junior Women’s World Championship in Clearwater, Fla., July 24-30.

A native of Cypress, Texas, Dalton attended Cy-Fair High School where she has was voted a team captain for her senior season. An injury cut short her junior season to just 12 games, but she still managed to hit .595 with 26 runs batted in, 19 runs scored, four doubles, three triples, two home runs, 10 stolen bases, eight walks and no strikeouts.

Ranked No. 34 in FloSoftball’s Top 100 for the class of 2016, she was tabbed first-team all-district and the school’s Defensive Player of the Year as a junior, while as a sophomore she earned district and school Offensive Player of the Year honors.

“Alissa Dalton is an infielder who is very versatile,” Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso said when Dalton signed to play with Oklahoma. “I’ve seen her play third, short and second. I’ve seen her do pretty much everything. She’s a left-handed hitter that can hit for power and hit through gaps. She is a tough, tough out. She is that kind of hitter that can work the count and get what she wants. I think she’s definitely going to make an impact as a freshman.”

The defending national champion Oklahoma Sooners open the 2017 season Feb. 9-11 at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Playing outside the United States for the first time in program history, OU is scheduled to face BYU, Auburn, Nebraska and Washington.
