A twenty-five year veteran of the Sooner staff, Greg Tipton was promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Internal Operations in July 2015. Prior to that, he served as Assistant Athletics Director from 2007-2011 and Associate Athletics Director from 2011-2015. In his current role, Tipton is responsible for the unit oversight of OU’s Internal Operations departments consisting of 35 full-time employees and 4 graduate assistants. Those departments include: Athletics Equipment Operations, oversight of the Lloyd Noble Center, Capital Improvements, Athletics Maintenance Operations, Athletics Grounds, Student Conduct & Accountability, Risk Management Assessment and serves as the primary sport administrator for the Sooners Volleyball and Baseball teams.
A native of Fairland, Oklahoma and a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, Tipton began his affiliation with the department in 1990 as a student equipment manager. He became the assistant equipment manager for football in 1995 and then took over as the football equipment manager in 1996. Tipton was promoted again in 2000 to Director of Athletics Equipment overseeing department purchasing and execution of footwear, apparel and equipment agreements.
Tipton was instrumental in the implementation of a web-based inventory control system for accountability of all OU’s athletics equipment, apparel and footwear. He was a key member of the negotiating teams that secured multi-year, multi-million dollar apparel and footwear agreements in 2003, 2008 and most recently in 2014 with Nike Incorporated.
He serves as one of the coordinators for OU’s bowl games and other championship trips and is responsible for overseeing hotel accommodations, bowl operational planning and purchase/distribution for all championship awards and gifts.
In his role of administrative oversight of the Lloyd Noble Center, he and his staff have vastly improved LNC marketing of the venue for outside events such as concerts and conferences. The enhanced marketing initiatives have proven successful with newly created revenue streams for the OU Athletics Department.
Tipton has played a key role in overseeing or assisting in the project management of nearly $30 million in OU Athletics capital improvement projects including the 2009 football operations/locker room renovations, McCasland Field House renovation, men’s and women’s basketball locker room renovations, women’s basketball office renovation, L. Dale Mitchell Baseball Park Phase I and Phase II, baseball/softball field replacement projects and most recently as a member of the project leadership team for the $160 million GFOMS south end zone project. He is also active in the coordination of the GFOMS master plan, LNC master plan, L. Dale Mitchell Baseball master plan and the Marita Hynes Softball Complex master plan.
He is a member of the Varsity O Association, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is a member of the Gamma-Kappa chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity at OU. Tipton has a bachelor’s degree from OU in Secondary English Education (1995), a master’s degree in Human Relations (1998), also from OU and is currently serving as an Adjunct Instructor in the Michel F. Price College of Business at the University of Oklahoma.
Tipton is married to the former Diana Westrope of Healdton, Oklahoma. Together the couple are the proud parents of three sons, Parker Tipton, Alex Cullison , Tyler Cullison and one daughter, Rachel Tipton.
