NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma women’s basketball team settled into its schedule this past week; morning workouts, classes, study halls, meetings with professors, basketball individuals, along, of course, with meals – breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks throughout the day.
The Sooners also added extra curricular activities to their jam-packed week, attending the OU volleyball scrimmage, cheering on the OU women’s soccer team and joining fellow student-athletes at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) meeting.
It was a trip to Oklahoma City that highlighted the week. The Sooners took the 20-mile trip North to make dinner for and play with the residents at the OK Kids Korral, an amazing project of the Toby Keith Foundation.
Opened in January of this year, the OK Kids Korral provides a cost-free, convenient and comfortable home for pediatric cancer patients (and their families) receiving treatment at The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center, Peggy & Charles Stephenson Cancer Center and other nearby facilities.
The women’s basketball team was lucky enough to spend time with five different children and their families this past Wednesday night.
On a mission when they arrived, the Sooners got to work making dinner – set to be served at 6 p.m. - consisting of hamburgers, hotdogs, baked beans, mac-n-cheese, Oreo pudding and funfetti cookies.
While Kaylon Williams perfected the mac-n-cheese, Shaya Kellog and Peyton Little baked the cookies and assistant coach Jan Ross mashed together the hamburgers, freshmen McKenna Treece and LaNesia Williams headed outside to play with the kids.
The basketball hoop was a favorite for all, as was the swing set, but with the Oklahoma heat in full effect, buckets arrived filled with water balloons. A balloon fight quickly broke out with the children set on drenching Treece, Williams, Gioya Carter, Whitney Ritchie and Sharane Campbell. And drench they did!
Dinnertime soon followed, it allowing the Sooners to get to know the kids and their families. Easy conversation flowed between everybody and, after each finished with their meals; they migrated to the craft table to paint pictures.
Signatures were soon added to the painted pictures, ‘team’ pictures were snapped and before you knew it the evening drew to a close, sooner than anybody wanted.
The Sooners pilled back into the caravan and headed towards Norman thankful for the inspiring and well-worth addition to their schedule.
