NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma Head Women’s Tennis Coach Dave Mullins and Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Joe Castiglione announced the Sooners’ six-event fall schedule Tuesday. The slate is highlighted by the OU Fall Invite and the USTA/ITA Central Regional Championships.
“This year’s fall schedule will hopefully provide all our new players the right level of competition in order to prepare them for our spring dual match season,” Mullins said. “I am really happy that their first college matches will be here at the Headington Family Tennis Center, and I hope that our fans will come out to support them as they kick off their college tennis careers.”
The OU Fall Invite will be held Sept. 19-21 in Norman. All OU players will compete individually and approximately 10 schools and 72 players overall will compete in singles and doubles action.
The Sooners will partake in the annual USTA/ITA Central Regional Championships, hosted this year by Oklahoma State, Oct. 16-19. The regional was held in Norman last year where seniors Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie won doubles.
After the OU Fall Invite and before the Central Regionals, freshmen Lily Miyazaki and Malene Stripp will travel to Hilton Head, S.C. to compete in the ITF Pro Circuit from Sept.29-Oct. 5. The tournament is played on clay courts.
“We are finally at a point where we are consistently attracting players that want to continue their tennis careers after college,” Mullins said. “This is the first time we have taken our student-athletes to these pro events, but our goal is to have our whole team playing in these type of tournaments consistently throughout the summer and fall.”
Miyazaki is currently ranked No. 698 in the ITF professional world rankings and competed in several professional events this summer. Recently, she made the finals of the Sharm El Sheikh ITF event in Egypt.
Stripp is one of the top Danish women’s players and recently made it through qualifying and reached the quarterfinals of the Bastad ITF event in Sweden this past May.
While Miyazaki and Stripp are in South Carolina, the rest of the team will be in Chicago participating in the Northwestern Invite.
The Sooners will conclude fall play with separate tournaments in Orlando and Houston from Oct. 31-Nov. 2.
