NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma campus was abuzz this week as another school year began. The summer-time quiet surrounding OU was replaced with the bustling of students, including the 15 women’s basketball student-athletes that returned to town ready to focus, and enjoy, another academic and athletic season.
The first-week excitement for the Sooners - two seniors, two juniors, six sophomores and five freshmen – included reconnecting with fellow students and faculty, meeting new staff and classmates, their opening team meeting and hitting the weight room and gym.
The best part of the week was saved for last; the Ice Cream Social with the Fast Break Club. An annual event that allows season-ticket holders to meet the squad’s newcomers and welcome back the returnees was held Thursday night.
Despite the heat, the extraordinary members of the Fast Break Club headed in droves to Reaves Park with their favorite home-made ice cream, cakes, cookies, brownies and mingled with the players and staff and listened to Sooner head coach Sherri Coale introduce her team.
The biggest applauses went out to senior Sharane Campbell-Olds and redshirt sophomore Maddie Manning when each was introduced. Campbell-Olds is the Sooners lone four-year senior and excited the crowd with the inside information that she was married this past July to long-time boyfriend Terrance Olds. Manning is now healthy after her two previous seasons in an OU uniform were cut short by injuries, and that alone, had the fans clapping and cheering loudly.
Coale also introduced one special Fast Break Club member: Terry Ware, a 1972 graduate of Oklahoma and well-known guitarist. Ware will perform with John Fullbright on the Late Show With David Letterman Thursday, Aug. 28 and will be in the stands when the Sooners host Washington, Nov. 17 to open the season.

A Few Coach Coale Quotes From The Ice Cream Social:
“I am blessed with three amazing assistant coaches. Not because of the coaches they are but because of the people they are. We have a great time together and many other staffs are envious of how much fun we have together.”
“I am so excited because this group of student-athletes has figured out how to work hard every day together.”
