NORMAN, Okla. -- Once a week until the beginning of the fall semester in mid-August, SoonerSports.com will introduce a new member of the OU men's basketball team. This week's feature subject is 6-4, 184-pound freshman Bola Alade (pronounced BO-luh uh-LAH-day).
From Murphy, Texas, Alade was a Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools 5A First-Team All-State selection as a senior last year at John Paul II High School in Plano. He averaged 17.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game and led his team to the state championship game where it lost by one point.
Alade said he received attention from several Division I programs, including Oklahoma, prior to his junior season, a year in which he missed all but four games due to a broken wrist and a foot stress fracture. Those injuries caused schools to back off.
Still with dreams of playing for a high major DI program like OU or Texas, Alade said he figured his best bet was to walk on and try to earn a scholarship down the road.
"I'd like to play professionally after college, and so I wanted to go to a Big 12 school and play with and learn from guys like Isaiah Cousins and Buddy Hield," he said. "If you want to be the best you have to play against the best. That's why I wound up here."
A sports management major whose parents were born in Nigeria, Alade was a classroom standout in high school. He earned academic all-state honors all four years and finished with a 3.86 cumulative GPA. He said he is extremely grateful for his opportunity at OU.
"The transition's been really good; just getting adjusted to college life, working out and going to class," said Alade. "It's a real honor to be here and I'm really blessed. I'm approaching everything with a positive mindset and with the attitude of wanting to get things done every day."
