NORMAN, Okla. -- Once a week until the beginning of the fall semester in mid-August, will introduce a new member of the OU men's basketball team. This week's feature subject is 6-1, 193-pound junior Dinjiyl Walker (first name pronounced din-JELL).

Among a growing number of NCAA Division I basketball players from Canada, Walker, who hails from Vaughan, Ontario (just north of Toronto), transferred to OU from Iowa Western Community College where he averaged 16.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game last year as a sophomore. The combo guard shot 39.5 percent from 3-point range (73 for 185) and 72.4 percent from the free throw line while earning second-team all-region honors.

Expected to see time at point guard and off the ball this season, Walker began his high school career at Vaughan Secondary School before playing his junior and senior seasons at Academy of the New Church near Philadelphia, Pa. He was a first-team Class A Pennsylvania Sportswriters All-State selection as a senior, averaging 21.2 points per game.

Walker is looking to add his own chapter to the recent success story written by fellow Big 12 hoopsters from Canada. Last year seven players from north of the border were on Big 12 rosters and six of them played significant roles on their teams: Kenny Chery and Brady Heslip (Baylor), Big 12 Player of the Year Melvin Ejim and Naz Long (Iowa State), No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick Andrew Wiggins (Kansas) and Dejan Kravic (Texas Tech).

"The coaches want me to be a combo guard," said Walker, who signed with OU in early May and will wear No. 2. "I feel like I can distribute the ball, protect it, get my teammates involved and score when it's needed. I'm also looking to just play hard and bring some toughness to the defensive end. I like playing defense, stopping my guy. I'm never afraid of the challenge."
