NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma men’s golf senior Michael Gellerman continued his impressive run at the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships (APL) after registering a 1 up win in Friday morning’s quarterfinals. The tournament is being played at the 7,365-yard, par-71 Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan.

To advance, Gellerman defeated the University of Louisville’s Robert Geibel, from Pembroke Pines, Fla. Gellerman led by as much as 3 up, grabbing wins on holes No. 2, 4 and 9. Despite Geibel cutting into the lead by winning holes No. 13 and 16, the duo tied on the final two holes as Gellerman secured the victory. It was the first time in Gellerman’s four matches this week that play was extended to the 18th hole.

Next, Gellerman will face Doug Ghim of Arlington Heights, Ill., who will be a freshman at Texas in the fall. The semifinal match is set to tee off at 12:30 p.m. CT on Friday. The event’s championship match will be played on Saturday.

Gellerman, whose hometown of Sterling, Kan., is just an hour from Sand Creek Station Golf Course, was the only Kansan from the 156-competitor field to make match play.

The APL is one of 13 individual national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. The tournament winner will play in the 2015 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
