Sooners Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

NORMAN, Okla. – A total of 17 University of Oklahoma track and field student-athletes were named to the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 Track and Field teams, the conference announced Wednesday.

Several seniors have earned Academic All-Big 12 honors multiple in times in their careers. For Molly Williams (human resource management), it marked her fifth honor in track and field after she had been a first team selection four times in cross country. Nathaniel Winfrey earned his fourth award (health and exercise science) while Morgan Nichols (finance) has received the honor three times.

A total of 189 student-athletes were named to the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 Track & Field Team. The team consists of 77 honorees on the men’s side and 112 female selections.

The men’s team is comprised of 53 first team members, while 24 student-athletes make up the second team. For the women, the first team consists of 96 members with 16 second team selections. Combined, there are a total of 149 first team honorees and 40 second team selections

First team honorees have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections have earned a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA cumulatively or for the last two semesters.

In addition to the GPA, student-athletes must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshman and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The Sooners have traveled to Lubbock, Texas, and are preparing for the Big 12 Championships that begin Friday.
