Head Coach Patty Gasso

On what the win does for the team:

“It was a big, big sweep. That’s telling from someone that’s kind of in the middle of understanding how all this works. The team we just beat has a very high RPI and that helps us tremendously, especially this weekend. I respect UAB. We don’t have a history with them, but I respect the program, their coach and the style of their play. I think that team made us better this weekend. They exposed some of our weaknesses and we had to play hard from first pitch to the last pitch on all days, we really did. I was really impressed by their efforts and some of their athletes.

"What we’re finding out is, for example today, being able to put Taylor Dewberry out on the mound for a start, who has not seen the mound in close to two months, to give us that amount of innings, but also in offense to say, ‘It’s okay, we got you. Don’t worry, we’ll back you up.’ And then to see Shelby Pendley close and get some of their big hitters to groundout. She understands where to put the ball and at the same time, she’s just a big time competitor. I thought that some people really stepped up. I thought that we really hit the ball hard all weekend. We left too many runners in scoring position and on base today, no doubt. It seemed like every time we looked up, we had bases loaded and they were getting themselves out of it. But at the same time, that means we’re swinging the bat really well. I thought today, the sweep is really something that’s going to help us. I think this weekend, we got better and I think we made UAB better. As you get to the end of the season, that’s what you want. It was a good weekend.”

On the importance of having Lauren Chamberlain back:
“Well, she’s our captain. She’s a great athlete and one of the best hitters in the country so it definitely means quite a bit. It really enforces our lineup. What I am starting to feel is a difference in our 7-8-9. If you followed along with us last year, you understand how important the bottom of your lineup is. Being able to take Destinee Martinez and move her from the two-spot to the seven-spot and today, to the nine-spot; Leslie Miller stepped in and had a couple of base on balls; Javen [Henson] has been hitting the ball hard and putting it in play. So, they can turn this lineup back over to Lauren in the leadoff spot. That’s now our absolute focus, is to get that bottom part of our lineup working and getting Lauren back in the lineup allows everything to bump down one. It gives us a little more power and productiveness.”

On what the sweep means going forward:
“We just took a little bit longer in the locker room today to talk about all of the things we still need to work on. We’re one of the hottest teams in the country, but what does that mean right now? We want to be one of those teams when we get down to the nitty gritty. We need to get better. We need to get our bunt game in order; we need to do some things better. It’s going to be a tough one-game road trip to Arkansas; again, another RPI-style team that can help us, an SEC team. All we want to do is make sure that we’re rested and ready for Texas Tech. That’s going to be a big, big home weekend and we’re going to be hungry for it. It’s a combination of practice, getting done what you need to get done and being able to rest and have bodies ready.”

Junior infielder Lauren Chamberlain

On how she feels coming back from injury:
“Really good. It feels like a long time. It just feels good to have the uniform on again and get out of the polo. Other than that, it was fun to be out with my teammates and you get to take a step back when you’re out and see the beauty of your teammates and how they play. To be thrown in the middle of it is great. Physically, [I felt] good; strong.”

On the walks she had this series:
“I felt like I was seeing the ball pretty well and that made me happy, that I was tracking it well. My attitude hasn’t changed about the walks. If I can get on for my team then I’m doing a good job.”
